Outdoor Learning
At Bleak Hill, we believe that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Our extensive outdoor spaces provide children with opportunities to explore, discover, create, take risks, develop independence and experience the natural world first-hand.
Our outdoor environment is a wonderful extension of our classrooms, offering children the chance to learn through curiosity, exploration and practical experiences. From investigating the changing seasons in our woodland to growing plants in our polytunnel, taking part in outdoor physical challenges or simply enjoying the freedom of open spaces, our children are encouraged to develop a lifelong connection with the outdoors.
We are incredibly fortunate to have a large woodland and forest area, which provides a rich environment for exploration, discovery and outdoor learning. Within this area, children can access our polytunnel and planting spaces, developing an understanding of nature, growing and sustainability. Our outdoor classroom provides a dedicated space for teaching and learning beyond the traditional classroom, while our storytelling throne area creates a special setting for stories, imagination and shared experiences.
Our commitment to outdoor learning extends across the whole school site. Children have access to a MUGA, three playgrounds and two trim trails, providing opportunities to develop physical skills, coordination, balance and gross motor skills. Our large playing field and running track, alongside two Daily Mile tracks, encourage children to be active throughout the school day and support their physical health and well-being.
We believe that every child should have access to high-quality outdoor experiences. Our range of spaces and activities allows children with different interests, strengths and needs to take part, develop their skills and enjoy learning outdoors. These experiences help children to build the strong foundations they need for future learning, physical development, independence and well-being.
Outdoor learning also provides opportunities to experience challenge, solve problems, work collaboratively and develop a sense of responsibility for the environment around them.
