British Values at Bleak Hill

“We want every school to promote the basic British Values of democracy, the rule of
law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance for those of different faiths
and beliefs.”
 DfE

At Bleak Hill, we have a strong school ethos (Bleak Hill Values) that actively encourages and promotes British Values. Our curriculum provides a wide range of opportunities for our children to engage with and experience British Values.

A key part of our plan is to ensure our children become valuable and fully rounded members of society who treat others with respect, in preparation for life in modern Britain.

The British Values are:

  • Democracy

Britain is a democracy - this means that the people in Britain vote for the people who make the laws and decide how the country is run.

  • Rule of Law

In Britain we have a police force and court system who make sure people do not do the wrong thing and break the law. They have the power to punish those who do so, keeping us safe.

  • Individual Liberty

We are free to live as we choose and to have our own opinions as long as this does not take away someone else's freedoms or break rules or laws.

  • Mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs

We accept and respect that other people might have different beliefs to ours. They may believe in different religions or no religion at all.

Democracy Day

We were lucky enough to be visited by David Baines, our MP in St Helens as part of our Democracy day in September. He talked to the school about why Democracy is important and how he was elected. He answered some of our questions about the legal system and gave us some great advice!

Then we split into house colours and listened to our Year 6 children who wanted to run for House Captains. We listened to amazing speeches and it was a really hard decision choosing our winners! We then voted in the ballot boxes and David Baines came to listen to some too!

In our classes, we then voted for our School Councilors. Finally, we listened to 24 children from Year 6 who would like to be our Prefects. We are looking for excellent role models, good friends, brilliant speakers and wonderful listeners. It was such a hard decision, we were so impressed with every single person who was confident enough to read out a speech in front of over 300 people! Incredible effort!
